Stein Rokkan Prize in Comparative Social Science Research
Thanks to the generosity of the University of Bergen, the Stein Rokkan Prize for Comparative Social Science Research, (presented by The International Social Science Council (ISSC), the University of Bergen and the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR))  now comprises an award of $5,000 and will be awarded on an annual basis.

The prize is open to all social science disciplines. It is given to a submission that is deemed by the Jury to be a very substantial and original contribution in comparative social science research. It can either be an unpublished manuscript of book length, or a printed book, or collected works published no more than two years before the award ceremony is to take place.

The 2012 prize jury comprises:

  • Professor Klaus Armingeon, Universität Bern (Chair)
  • Professor Stein Kuhnle, University of Bergen/Hertie School of Governance, Berlin
  • Professor Ingrid van Biezen
  • Professor Manfred G Schmidt, Universität Heidelberg

Requirements for candidates:
The prize is open to all candidates from all social science disciplines however ECPR Executive Committee members and ECPR Editorial Committee members are excluded.

  • Submissions should be sent by email to lpugh@essex.ac.ukand must include: the author's name, book title, year of publication (if published) and the name of person who making the nomination.  This must be sent together with a formal letter in support of the nomination from the head of a research institution, head of university department or head of research centre. This letter must include information on the nominee, his/her work, and their motivate their candidacy for the award before the deadline.
  • Deadline for submissions is 1st February 2012.
  • After 1st February 2012, all received nominees will be informed and required to forward 4 x hard copies of their full title to the Jury for consideration.

Submissions must:

  • Be a very substantial and original contribution in comparative social science research.
  • Be an unpublished manuscript of book length, or a printed book, or collected works published within the two years preceding the award ceremony. Edited volumes will not be considered.
  • The submission should be in English preferably, however a submission is written in another language, must be accompanied by an English summary of the work.
  • Be accompanied by a formal letter in support of the nomination from the head of a research institution, head of university department or head of research centre. This letter must include information on the nominee, his/her work, and motivate their candidacy for the award.
  • Four x hard copies of manuscripts, typed double space, or of printed works must be submitted to Jury members - ECPR will contact all nominees with full details after 1st February 2012 deadline.  Electronic versions will not be accepted.

Announcement of the 2012 prize winner and information about the Award Ceremony:

  • The decision of the Jury will be announced by June 2012.
  • The prize winner will be invited to attend an Award Ceremony, which is expected to be held towards the end of November annually.
  • The ISSC will organise the Award Ceremony, during which prize winner will be expected to give a public lecture on the work for which they have been awarded the prize.
  • The ISSC will organise a reception in honour of the winner.
