PhD Prize Winners
The Jean Blondel PhD Prize in 2009 is
awarded to Daniel Mügge for his dissertation
Widen the Market, Narrow the Competition:
The Emergence of Supranational Governance in
EU Capital Markets
The jury of the prize (Alfio Mastropaolo,
Susan Scarrow and Vincent Hoffmann-Martinot)
considered this dissertation to be extremely
well written, fascinating and timely. It is
an excellent dissertation in international
political economy, addressing a key issue
concerning the supranationalization of
governance: how can we best understand
changes in patterns of governance in
relation to shifting market structures? The
prize will be awarded during the Joint
Sessions of Workshops in Münster in March
2010
Since August 2008, Daniel Mügge has been Assistant professor in International Relations and
International Political Economy at the University of Amsterdam. In 2002, he was awarded an
MA in International Relations (with honours) at the International School for Humanities and
Social Sciences (ISHSS), University of Amsterdam.
In September 2008, he defended his dissertation Widen the Market, Narrow the Competition:
The Emergence of Supranational Governance in EU Capital Markets with a committee composed
of Prof. G.R.D. Underhill (advisor), Dr. B.M. Burgoon, Prof. G.C.A. Junne, Prof. S.P. Lütz,
and Prof. J.H.F. Story.

2008
The Jean Blondel PhD Prize was presented by Jean Blondel to Silja Häusermann who is a Max Weber Fellow
at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, and a reader (Oberassistentin) in comparative politics
at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. She studied political science at the Universities of Geneva, Lausanne,
Zurich, and at Harvard University. Her interests are in comparative politics and comparative political economy.
More specifically, she has done research on welfare states, party systems, and institutional change. Her PhD
thesis analysed the adaptation of continental welfare states to post-industrial risk structures.
Silja Häusermann (University of Zurich) was awarded the 2008 ECPR PhD Prize during the 2nd ECPR Graduate
Conference at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in August 2008, for her thesis 'Modernization in Hard Times:
Post-Industrial Pension Politics in France, Germany, and Switzerland'.
2007
Tanja Aalberts (Leiden University) was awarded the 2007 ECPR PhD Prize during the 4th ECPR General Conference
at the University of Pisa in September 2007 for her thesis 'Politics of Sovereignty'.
Since August 2006, Tanja E. Aalberts has been Assistant Professor at Leiden University, Department of Political
Science. She obtained an MA in 1999 in Public Administration and Management (Bestuurskunde) at Twente University,
Enschede, and in 2000 an MscEcon. in International Politics at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. In June 2006,
she defended her dissertation Politics of Sovereignty, which was prepared and defended at the Political Science
Department of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and was awarded to her cum laude.
2006
Daniel Naurin (University of Gothenburg) was awarded the 2006 PhD Prize during the inaugural ECPR Graduate
Conference at the University of Essex in September 2006 for his thesis 'Dressed for Politics: Why increasing
transparency in the European Union will not make lobbyists behave any better than they already do'. A revised
version of this work will be published in the ECPR Monographs series in late 2007.

2005
The winner of the 2005 PhD Prize was Laura Morales Diez De Ulzurrun (Universidad de Murcia) for her
thesis 'Institutions, Mobilisation, and Political Participation: Political Membership in Western Countries'.
The Prize was presented at the 3rd ECPR General Conference in Budapest. A developed version of Dr Morales'
thesis will be published by the ECPR Press in early 2008.

2004
In 2004 the PhD prize was awarded to Kevin Casas Zamora (University of Oxford), for his thesis
'Paying for Democracy in Latin America: Political Finance and State Funding for Parties in Cosa Rica and Uruguay'.
The prize was presented to Dr Casas Zamora at the ECPR Joint Sessions of Workshops in Granada, during the reception
to launch the ECPR Press and the 'Classics' and 'Monographs' Series. Dr Casas Zamora's thesis has since been
developed into a book, and was published by the ECPR Press in 2005.
