6th ECPR General Conference
University of Iceland
(25th - 27th Aug. 2011)

The ECPR’s 6th General Conference saw some 2,500 delegates converge in Reykjavik – this was not only the largest event ever staged by the ECPR, but also the largest held in Iceland to date.

Harpa Convention CentreThe rich academic programme consisted of 60 sections covering themes from ‘Politics and the Arts in a Time of Crisis and Anxiety’ to ‘The Politics of Retrenchment and Welfare State Policy’ each consisting of around six panels each examining the given subject. In addition, participants were able to enjoy the book exhibition which ran throughout the conference where all of the major international academic presses were represented alongside some smaller European publishing houses, all offering an opportunity to either discuss book proposals or make a purchase.

President Grimsson of IcelandThe highlight to the full social programme was the plenary lecture by the President of Iceland, Olafur Ragnar Grímsson. Former Professor of Political Science at the University of Iceland, the ECPR was honoured to have the President give the lecture in the stunning surroundings of Reykjavik’s brand new Harpa Convention Centre.

Donnatelle della PortaDuring this evening the ECPR also presented two of its Prizes: the ECPR Lifetime Achievement Award to Hans Dieter Klingemann and the Mattei Dogan Foundation Award to Donatella della Porta. Once the prize giving and lecture had concluded, attendees were invited to a reception at the Harpa; understandably this was the most well attended lecture and reception the ECPR has ever staged.

Due to the continued success of the General Conference, the ECPR took the decision at its Executive Committee meeting in St Gallen in April to make the General Conference an annual event from 2013 when the Conference will take place in Bordeaux. If your institution is interested in hosting the General Conference (or indeed the Joint Sessions or Graduate Conference) please contact Conference Manager Sandra Thompson to discuss how hosting an ECPR event can bring both prestige to your university and an economic boost to your town or city.
